VFRS-EMS162-4 The Hand-Off-Transferring Patient Care -Trauma Alerts and Critical Medical Situations
Lead Instructor: Josh Andrews
n the fast-paced world of EMS and emergency medicine, the transfer of patient care is one of the most critical—and vulnerable—moments in the continuum of care. This course is designed to enhance the skills of EMS providers in effectively communicating patient information during trauma alerts and critical medical handoffs. Participants will learn structured communication tools such as SBAR and IMIST-AMBO (Identification, Mechanism/Medical Complaint, Injuries/Information, Signs, Treatment, Allergies, Meds, Background, Other), explore the differences between trauma and medical handoffs, and identify common barriers that lead to information loss or confusion. Through case studies, scenario-based discussions, and practical examples, providers will develop confidence in delivering concise, accurate, and high-impact handoffs that promote patient safety, strengthen hospital collaboration, and ensure continuity of care.
