VFRS-EMS162-2 Understanding the Puzzle-Autism and the First Responder
Lead Instructor: Scott McCormack
Are you prepared to manage a patient with these needs? In our initial certification classes there is little focus on patient’s with special needs. The population on the spectrum has increased over the decades and we are continuing to learn about this patients every day. The most significant impact on these patients is that this first interaction with first responders can effect every other emergency they experience. In order to understand how to help patients on the spectrum is to understand more about the “neurodivergent”. Assessing a patient who is autistic is very different that a neurotypical patient and there are a lot of modifications that need to be made and understood.
